ZOUAVES

This is a historical novel based on real events.

In 1860 a group of about 1000 young Irish men went to Italy to fight for the Pope against Garibaldi.   It was the wrong side to be on.   Conditions were appalling, they got little training, poor food and  irregular pay.   Their  uniforms, when they finally got them, were  the cast-offs from  the French army and too small for them.     Then, instead of fighting Garibaldi and his rabble arm,  they had to  face the might of Piedmont, the most up-to-date army in Europe at the time.

The novel follows Patrick and his friends who join up for the Pope in the hope of adventure.   They  meet the enigmatic fire-eater, The Amazing Zendo, get into scrapes over girls,  see action in Perugia, escape  capture and get  kidnapped by bandits.
