And where are our heros?
Teenage boys have saints, scholars, adventurers, kings, lords, politicians, scientists and storybook heros who do brave deeds, conquer evil and rescue the weak, mostly women.
Teenage girls have:
Saints… all are virgins and martyrs… limits our options!
Historical figures… either evil schemers or somebody’s wife.
Scientists… merit no more that a few lines while less brilliant male scientists merit several paragraphs.
Politicians… reported primarily for their hairstyles, footwear, clothing.
Storybook characters…. mostly being rescued by Princes.
Pop stars, Celebrities, Actors… constantly criticised in public for weight loss/ weight gain/ cellulite/ baby weight/clothes etc. etc. etc.
In spite of this and our insecurities about our bodies many of us have turned out well-balanced, have achieved things we’re proud of and live happy lives.
BUT NOW WE HAVE THE IRISH WOMEN’S RUGGBY TEAM TO LOOK UP TO .
BRILLIANT! HURRAH!.
MAY YOUR HAMSTRINGS BE MADE OF PURE STEEL!
