Story time with Catherine Brophey
Catherine Brophy is a writer, storyteller and broadcaster, she also facilitates workshops. She leads a blameless life in Ireland but travels whenever she can. She’s been rescued by a circus troupe in Serbia, had breakfast with a Zambian chief, ate camel stew in the Sahara, and was kicked by a horse on the Mexican plain. Yeah…she has a couple of stories to tell. QUOTES: Stories are not just for children, why should they have all the fun? Every story has a lesson but only the listener knows what that is. ( Indris Shah his idea, not a direct quote) STORIES Catherine’s stories often make people laugh, sometimes to her own surprise and delight. She tells a wide variety of stories, Fairy stories, myth and legend, folk stories, travel and personal stories. The choice depends on the audience. ----- Sidewalk Serenade is a community-focused talent agency that specialises in bespoke live performance experiences. Catherine has been a guest teller on many occasions with Moth & Butterfly in Galway, including at ILDF, Culture Night and more recently Cúirt Festival.

I have also had the pleasure of working on a trio show with her at various venues. Catherine is such a lovely teller, and can always be relied upon to bring her sharp wit, her warmth, and her wealth of stories to all performances!

I attended a writing workshop given by Catherine. It was a great experience. And very helpful in getting over my hesitation to write stories which had been haunting me for years. Apart from that it was fun, which I consider an important factor in learning. Catherine is good in helping silence the inner critic and making it feel safe enough to read our creations in front of others. If you’ve been thinking of doing a writing workshop for years and haven’t got round to it, do it now.

Catherine Brophy is a true gem. We've booked her for events at the Signal Arts Centre and for The Jam in Bray, and she always brings something special. With a twinkle in her eye and sparkle in her outfit, she lights up the room. Her stories are rich, funny, surprising, and deeply human — she’s travelled the world and knows exactly how to share it. Every time she performs, we get fantastic feedback. I’d highly recommend her for any event that needs heart, humour, and a little magic.

Catherine Brophy is a highly talented oral storyteller. I recently engaged her to perform at the YARN Story Circle in the Town Hall in Bray. This is a monthly storytelling event for adult audiences.

Catherine engaged the group from the start and interwove a beautiful set of both folk and personal tales. We look forward to welcoming Catherine in November 2025 with A Fortunate Life, her one woman storytelling show, to Mermaid's stage as part of our YARN Storytelling Festival.
